I don’t know about you but I struggle to find a hobby that lasts. I’ve tried taking up a whole range of different things in my spare time; tennis, hockey, cricket, astronomy, fishing, the violin… I even took up knitting at one stage! But none of them seem to have really stuck.
Some things I’ve taken up have been really fulfilling and enjoyable, but after a while the honeymoon period ends and enjoyment starts to fizzle out. What initially started as an exciting opportunity to play hockey every week became a chore and a tiresome responsibility by the 3rd or 4th season.
I don’t know exactly what this says about me, perhaps that I lack drive and motivation, perhaps that I struggle with commitment or direction, but all I do know is that there is one thing in my life that has refused to be shaken off once taken up:
My relationship with Jesus.
Of course, relationships with people are very different to a hobby we might take up, but for a long time being a Christian was a hobby to me. Church was a social club, where we attended each week, read the bible and sang songs. If we completed this holy trinity then we’d ticked all the boxes and membership into the Christian family was ours. If this had continued to be the way I saw things and Jesus hadn’t stepped in then I’m not sure I could have kept it up for a very long time!
The true definition of being a Christian is so much more than a hobby or a lifestyle choice- it’s our lives! Giving ourselves to God is a commitment and it means putting Him in charge of everything we are. It’s not something to amuse us in our spare time, it’s all or nothing.
I can’t simply shake Jesus off and move on to the next thing that takes my interest because He is so wholly and utterly captivating! It’s hard to get bored of someone who pursued us unto death on the cross, giving His life for us that we might experience relationship with Him. The character of God is so vast, so rich that we barely scratch the surface of who He is and what He’s done.
There is something so beautiful, so irresistible about Him that draws us in deeper, inviting us to journey with Him, chasing after His heart and His love. We’re on a never-ending honeymoon period with Him.
Don’t get me wrong, if we follow Jesus we know it’s not easy in the slightest. It means compromise and sacrifice. It means loving people that we really don’t want to, and honestly answering awkward questions about what we got up to on Sunday. There are times when I’ve been thoroughly fed up with being a Christian and felt like throwing it all away. I’m sure some of you will know exactly what I’m talking about!
But it’s at those moments when life is slipping through our fingers that we feel Jesus holding onto us and not letting go! In my own strength, with my short attention span and faltering motivation, I would have given up long ago. But Jesus, in His grace, mercy and love, never turns His back on us for a second. He’s committed to His church.
