What happened?
A group of 12 experienced a very eventful weekend outside our Church!
Erecting the 3 shelters was a awesome task; teamwork was the order of the day.
By the time they were finished it was dark and everyone was relieved to have a shelter for the night! Sleep proved elusive as the weather deteriorated and hasty repairs were needed. Some found the food a real challenge but by the end of the weekend were grateful for it.
One of the biggest impacts on the group was when one of the slums was demolished with only
5 minutes warning (one of our Church members - an ex power-lifting champion agreed to do it for us) none of the youth knew about it and some were literally dumb struck afterwards.
The crime challenge also raised emotions of vulnerability and outrage when a personal item was 'stolen' from the camp. Both challenges really hit home and made our group experience just a little of what people living in slum dwellings go through. We did get wet, cold and hungry!
This event bound the group together. Many visitors came to see the slums and we posted information about the homeless all over the shelters for people to read. We reflected on the Beatitudes in our bible study.
Around £200 was raised by public donations and another £200 from pledged sponsors with more to come. A memorable experience. None of us will view the homeless in quite the same way again. A great opportunity for the group to show that God cares and he wants us all to care too. We can all make a difference wherever we are. Thanks SOUL ACTION! we wouldn't have missed it for the world!!
