What happened?
One 6th of our world live in complete poverty. They survive on 48p a day.
Truro Methodist Church youth spent one weekend how millions of people spend their entire lives.
On the 19th October, after school, us youth hurried home, got changed, got our stuff together and rushed down to church. As soon as we arrived, our Slum Experience started!
Before we could take part in any activities we had to build our slums. We were put into families for the weekend, and started to build!
The materials we had to make our ‘homes’ out of were:
- Wooden pallets
- Tarpaulin
- Cardboard
- MDF
- Newspaper
It took us 4 hours to make the slums, and when we had finished we needed a well-deserved break. But no. Steph wasn’t having us hard working youth resting! So she decided it was time to start cooking tea. (Our lentils had been soaking while we had been building). After an hour of cooking rice and lentils, it was time to eat!
It was not the nicest tea on the planet. Actually it was very boring. We hating eating it over the weekend, but it imagine you had to live off it your whole life!
After tea we washed up and got ready for the first bible study of the weekend that was led by Beth Harris.
The first night was very tiring but we did manage to get 7 ½ hours sleep!
Saturday was full of challenges, from making jewellery to carrying water on our heads!
The day carried on with us getting hungrier and hungrier as we weren’t used to not having any lunch. But when it got to about 6 it was time to start cooking tea again.
On Sunday we carried on selling the jewellery that we had made on the Saturday and also welcoming the mayor and all the important people in Truro. Which was quite funny as smelly, dirty and tired teenagers greeted them!
Slum Survivor was tiring but an amazing experience. It really helped us to realise how tough it is for people in developing countries to live.
We managed to raise £915.00 which all went to Soul Action
