What happened?
The day itself started very cold, the icy wind and the rain in the morning meant that by 10am we decided that it was going to be too cold to stay out for the whole day and planned to leave about 2pm. The weather also meant that people didn't fancy stopping to chat...however, we did have a few good and interesting converstions with people but many more bemused expressions and quizzical faces. We managed to give out about 500 leaflets and raised a contribution for the Soul Action projects in South Africa.
I am so grateful to the people that helped on the day and with the preparation that was needed before it. It was especially good that this was not solely a Kings Home church project but there had been input, support and prayers for the event from people from a number of churches and sources in the area.
My main reflections of the exercise were that:
1. It is important for the church to take responsibility for raising peoples (not just Christians) awareness on issues such as global poverty
2. I believe our presence and our effort has made a difference in the spritual, just by making a stand against injustice in the name of Jesus in such a public place.
3. The idea of praying for things such as Global Poverty is not as offensive an idea to non-Christians as I thought it might be but it is still nethertheless quite an alien concept.
4. Another campaign of similar description would be best done in the warmer months of the spring or summer especially when people might be more inclined to stop and chat!!
