What happened?
Our Slum Survivor Weekend was amazing. We had between 6-10 young people involved during the whole weekend, which started at 4pm on the Friday and ended after the church service on Sunday afternoon.

We started off by taking all the young peoples' luxury items off them, and then the slum building challenge. The young people did an amazing job here with one slum with a pointed roof, and the girls' slum had a annex for the female youth worker!

We then had dinner cooked over an open fire, our lentil mix was edible but not brilliant. It seemed to take a while to cook, but it was a brilliant chance for fellowship with the young people. We continued to eat around the fire for the other meals, which were all followed by a bible study. During these bible studies the young people were able to be freed from the ties of modern comforts allowing them to grow in their faith.

On the Saturday the young people made an amazing football from string, newspaper and tape, which we had a great game of football with.

The afternoon saw the young people going round to congregation members houses to do manual labour such as gardening, washing up and cleaning toilets, for the minimum wage.

Upon returning to the slum area the young people found that 'the government' had been and knocked down all the slums for development. There were many emotions displayed at this point, with a few young people nearly leaving. It took nearly an hour for them to motivate themselves to rebuild the slums in order that they might have somewhere to sleep that night.

Are there any great stories?
The Saturday night bible study lasted for about 2.5hours as the discussion of The Beatitudes led onto things which they were beginning to realise that God was calling them to change in their lives. Also the way they had to deal with their emotions, or anger, sadness, and frustration after the demolition of the slums really added some character to them all and was a challenging moment in their weekend.

Any suggestions for new challenges?
The minimum wage challenge worked amazingly and really helped to get members of the congregation involved in Slum Survivor as well as providing some talking points for the young people.
