26th - 28th October

What type of Slum Survivor event was it?

We held a Slum Survivor Weekend

How many people were involved?

We had 25 people involved, 5 over 18 year old's, with the rest under 18. The youngest  are only 7 and 8 (they both slept out for 2 nights but had slightly more food and a teddy bear).

What happened?

Our little Methodist chapel in the village of Oakhill on the Mendips just North of Shepton Mallet took part in Slum Survivor last week. Our group is called AdLib ( because however much we plan the evenings we end up making it up as we go along!) and our strap line is "Everything we do we do for God" .

23 young people ages 7 to 18 took part with another 6 adults helping and we had an amazing time. We got our slums up OK and they all pretty much leaked on the bucket test! And then it rained for most of the next 40 hours or so.

We kept to the diet of rice and dhal and only drank water and we made paper bags to buy the food for the Saturday evening meal. I have to say that by 4pm Saturday afternoon we were really flagging, it was tough. However most people kept going and we did some of the challenges but keeping going was easily the biggest challenge.

Things we learned were:

However meager your house is you become very attached to it, it is still home. Cardboard slums are homes and precious to those who live there.

Rice and Dhal wash up nicely because there is no fat in it! No Fairy liquid needed.

You will work half a day at least to earn enough for a small piece of chocolate.

We use food and drink a lot as personal rewards. When they are gone you really notice how difficult it is to cheer yourself up.

Some people walk by without a second glance. It is amazing how we get totally wrapped in our own world.

It was a very precious experience please check out our photos on my Facebook. We have made a video of our weekend with the Queen track "Under Pressure" behind it. The words are incredibly poignant.”

Hope you all had a good time too.

God Bless from the AdLib crew
