What happened?
We held our Slum Survivor event over the weekend of 3-4th November, at the same venue that the church were holding their fireworks event.
Thirty teenagers spent time on Saturday building their slum and learning about the last, the least and the lost, before over 300 people came in the evening to hear an evangelistic talk, see their slum and enjoy the fireworks.
It was a real challenge for the teenagers to eat their rice and lentils while all the other people tucked into soup and hot dogs – it illustrated superbly the point that often the rich and poor live side by side.
Near the end of the evening those stewarding the fireworks event came and told the youth group that their slum had to be moved – and to the horror of the watching crowd began to knock it down! The point of ‘slum tourists’ – people coming just to gawp at people living in a slum – was also well made.
Overall we raised over £1000 too!
