Welcome to the Slum Survivor at Momentum pages. Here we'll have details of the adventurous delegates who took part in the Slum Survivor challnege at this year's Momentum.
We hope to have some little movies and video diaries of thier experiences, plus some written reflections on what they learnt through the experience... it's going to be ace!
For now we've just got a few brief comments about their experiences, but more will be coming soon!
Some reflections...
"Wow, it’s amazing how much of a difference a sandwich can make. From feeling utterly starving, annoyed and cold to full and amazingly happy. God will provide…..and it shows how little things for us that we do for others can make a massive difference to others"
"It’s interesting how quickly your perspectives change. Suddenly a bin full of rubbish becomes a treasure chest as you make a pillow from a discarded pizza box. A sheet of newspaper is actually a paper bag not yet made up that could be sold for food. Making sellable items out of rubbish has proved fun and empowering. A little bit of creativity and hard work equals an item desirable to another equals we can eat tomorrow. Living life day to day is precarious, a danger we insulate in our wealth. But it does boil down to the issue of perspective. You can live quite happily with very little if you so choose to"
Best things about being in the Slum Survivor
Challenge:
1) Gaining a greater understanding of what it is like living in poverty
2) Our little family community within the slum
3) Excitement about simple things like rice and dhal and finding rubbish to make stuff out of
4) Appreciating what we have back home and choices we can make
Worst things about being in the Slum Survivor Challenge:
1) Missing our friends who are on site
2) Everything being so different to our normal lives back home
3) Different and simple food that is the same every meal!
4) Not getting enough sleep
5) Not having the comforts of back home
More stuff will be coming soon... so check back later!
