We held a Slum Survivor event at our church with about 24 staying the first night and 15 staying the whole weekend.  Those involved were ages 11-17.

We arrived on the friday afternoon and proceeded to build slums out of materials such as wood, crates, cardboard and tarpualin. We then cooked some rice and dahl to eat and served this throughout the camp. In the evening we also had a bible study from the slum survivor resource booklet. We didn't get much sleep that first night as it was a bit cold and some of the young people were a little too excited, although I think they regreted it the next day and some had to be taken home with exhaustion!

Throughout the next day we did various challenges including making money from selling toys that were made out of scrap materials and also water collecting. We also got them to do a spelling challenge during which their slums were destroyed. This had a massive impact on them and they learnt a lot through the process of rebuilding them.

On the sunday morning we again had rice and dahl and had more bible studies. That afternoon, we went into church and explained what  we were doing and why we were doing it.
 The weekend as a whole proved to be very succesful and really helped improve the young people's and our awareness of poverty and the need for justice in other countries as well as our own, and we believe that the weekend impacted the young people and will stay in their memory and hopefully impact their lives in a practical way.

 It's still coming in but the total in sponsorship money we have raised is probably over £700.
