What happened before...
It was amazing! We did a weekend back in February it was cold and the conditions were unbelievable! In a small way it showed us what conditions people survive in and it was the beginning of God softening our hearts to this cause.
Post event info...
The young people did Slum Survivor this weekend. It's a brilliant concept for a youth weekend and a real challenge for those who take part. Building the slums made young people who don't get on with each other work together, being away from PSPs, phones and other comfort stuff made us all interact with each other on a new level. Having to entertain ourselves with limited resources was a new experience and going to bed feeling hungry on Saturday night after only eating rice and dhal for our main meal made us appreciate something of the reality of slum life.
Some important lessons were learnt:
1. The value of everyday items for food, and shelter (after winning 3 sweets for taking part in a game some the young people placed 2 of their sweets carefully inside their mug to save them for later)
2. That God wants us to care for those who are the last, the least and the lost and wants us to do something about sharing his love with them.
3. Not to let the young people play frisbee with saucepan lids inside the church (broken window, ouch!)
4. When cooking outside on a camping stove you have to light the gas with a match, it does not light itself (easily could have had an explosion)
