POST EVENT INFO...

31 young people from 'The Beacon Community Trust' youth group, IMPACT took part in slum survivor 2008 and a wonderful and moving time was had by all. We do not know how much we have raised yet but we except to have hit our £2000 target.

Quotes from some of the young people:
"I really think I learnt a lot from the experience. By the end of the weekend I was dead on my feet, and that was only after 2 days! I really wish we could help those who have to put up with it week after week." Dan Thorne (age 14)

"It never ceases to astound me how difficult I find slum survivor each year! Whether I'm hungry, cold or just lacking in energy I always seem to struggle through the couple of days. So I promise myself "NEVER AGAIN!" but every year I seem to come back  for more. I think the real reason for this is that you are not thinking about what you're having for tea,  what coursework you have to do, or who's house you are sleeping over at the weekend, and your life is stripped down to being all of a sudden very simple, then you start to think about the important things in life. And this year especially,  the sense of community, the closeness to God and our passion for the poor was really something I will draw on in my everyday life." Emma Rice (age 14)

"Slum Survivor was an experience that once again challenged me about my comfortable lifestyle. It encouraged me to get out and do more for those in poverty by putting my words into actions. Now when I sing those songs about injustice and God's heart for the poor it really means something deep within my heart and spurs me on to continue the work that I feel God has called me to do with those in poverty." Jess West (age 17)
