It wasn ’t the easiest weekend for slumming it! During our slum survivor experience, the group battled against the elements, at times getting very cold and wet.
The weekend began with the construction of a shelter in the church car park, out of wooden pallets from a local building site and a tarpaulin. After lunch - a small portion of lentils and kidney beans - the group undertook a series of challenges, including trying to raise income by making jewellery, toys and paper bags out of scrap and selling them to visitors.
A church member, who had visited a slum in India, shared her experiences and challenged us to think about undertaking a trip to the developing world, to encounter the realities of slum life. Before bedding down for the night, the group studied what the Bible has to say about poverty and praying for those who are poor and marginalised.
On the Sunday morning, we held a service on the theme of mercy and justice for the world – reporting back on the Slum Survivor experience and then using resources from Micah Challenge to think and pray through issues of justice.
The group has raised over £650 so far, with donations still coming in.
Some quotes from the group:
Cameron (16): “The experience really made us appreciate the warmth and comfort of being at home and having a bed – as well as always having food available whenever you want it”.
Razvan (16): “It was amazing to experience the difference between the two types of life. Usually I would have a snack between meals, but I learned that even this is a privilege. I am going to thank God every time I get into the comfort of my bed!”
Peter (19): “It was a good experience to discover you could have fun just by making a football out of newspaper and tape. I was surprised at how difficult it was not listening to my ipod or having access to my mobile.”
Tim (19): “Slum Survivor has been a very powerful experience. Actually experiencing a more uncomfortable way of life was a really effective way of helping me identify with those who have no other choice about how to live.
“We were all hoping to finish the weekend with a better understanding of what life is like for the poorest people around the world, and we have definitely achieved that - plus we now feel even more grateful for what we consider 'normal life'. I'm very proud to have been involved in a project that raised so much money, and that as young people in Islington, we can show the radically different, loving way of life God wants us to live.”
