In 2000 we served the city of Manchester during the Message.  In 2004 it was London for SOULINTHECITY.  If you were there you’ll know what SOULINTHECITY Durban in 2009 is all about: putting our faith into action.  Telling people about Jesus through our words and deeds.  Working alongside churches in the area to relieve injustice.  But this time we want to go to Durban in South Africa where thousands live in extreme poverty.  We want to give and to serve so we can bring change but also so that we can be changed.

There’s a Chinese proverb that we love:

I hear, I forget
I see, I remember
I do, I understand.

And that’s what is at the heart of SOULINTHECITY Durban. As we step out, we will learn more about our world and God’s heart for it. We’ll be putting faces to issues we’ve heard about on the news like young people who have no where to live but the streets.  Children dying from AIDS with no parents to look after or love them.  Single parents with their children crammed into tiny shacks in townships.  Hunger.  Poverty.  Pain. Injustice.   

SOULINTHECITY Durban is our opportunity to see change. In the lives of others and in our hearts. We ’ll meet with Jesus. We’ll be acting like Jesus.  And we won’t come back the same.

What’s involved?
Between 27th June and 15th August 2009, teams of people will head out to Durban for two weeks, giving you eight different departure dates to choose from.  We’ve linked up with many churches and charities that do fantastic ongoing work in Durban and would love some extra help. 

You could be spending your time doing anything from setting up holiday clubs to distributing food packs to street children, teaching life skills to teenagers to painting and decorating an orphanage, assisting in a soup kitchen to co-ordinating a sports event.  Most evenings we’ll gather together to worship God in song, to hear from the Bible, to share what God is doing amongst us and to receive ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. The weekends will also offer optional trips to a game park or to a celebration/evangelistic event and you will also get a day off to rest during your two weeks!
